Discover one of nature’s most ancient creatures—sea turtles, who have existed for over 150 million years! These incredible animals are vital for healthy beaches and marine ecosystems, and Indonesia is home to six of the world’s seven sea turtle species:
Green Turtle (Chelonia mydas)
Hawksbill Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata)
Olive Ridley Turtle (Lepidochelys olivacea)
Leatherback Turtle (Dermochelys coriacea)
Flatback Turtle (Natator depressus)
Loggerhead Turtle (Caretta caretta)
The only species not found in Indonesia is the Kemp’s Ridley Turtle, native to the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico.
Sea turtles take 30 years to mature, lay 60–130 eggs, and reproduce only every 2–5 years. Shockingly, only 1–2% of hatchlings survive to adulthood, making conservation critical.
Another major threat comes from the consumption of turtle eggs, often believed to be nutritious or aphrodisiac. Research shows that turtle eggs contain Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP), including coplanar PCBs, which can cause cancer, liver damage, endocrine disruption, and birth defects—with levels 300 times higher than the WHO’s safe limits.
Baliedu’s Sea Turtle Educational Program gives students and travelers the chance to learn, observe, and take part in conservation efforts, making a real difference for these amazing creatures.
