Tenganan is one of the Bali Mula village, the original Balinese, with its own customs and tradition differing from other parts. The unique ceremonies in this village mostly occur once a year. One of them is the famous Rejang Dance with the Gamelan Selonding accompaniment (Selonding is a kind of percussion music which is only found in this village). Other ceremony is Perang Pandan or Mekare-kare, a ceremony in which the men have to fight with thorny pandanus leaves for weapons. The medical care for the wounded dancer is the responsibility of the magicians who will, in this ceremony, show their magic powers.

Furthermore, this village is known as the only place in Indonesia where double ikat is made. Apart from Tenganan, double ikat weaving is made in just three other locations- two in India (Gujarat and Telangana) and one in Japan (Okinawa).

The Tenganan people make the famous Kamben Gringsing, a special tied-dyed woven cloth using traditional colors. Double ikat weaving is much more difficult. The weaver tie-dyes both the warp and weft threads before weaving them together. Sometimes its complicated process takes as long as two years for a piece.

Only a few women in Tenganan village now practice the art. It is like a meditation in action, the art of double ikat weaving centers the mind and liberates the heart through creativity. If you would like to explore the exciting process of double ikat weaving, then you need to visit the Tenganan village. Please see out itinerary and contact us for details.
