Bali Cultural Attraction: The Majestic Besakih Temple

Bali is a sparkling gem within the Indonesian archipelago—a vast nation comprising over 17,000 islands. While Indonesia is incredibly diverse, Bali holds a unique cultural distinction: of its more than 4.3 million residents, the vast majority practice Balinese Hinduism. While smaller Hindu communities exist in Sumatra, Lombok, Kalimantan, and among the Tenggerese people in East Java, Bali remains the vibrant spiritual heart of the religion, giving the island an atmosphere unlike anywhere else on Earth.

In the Balinese language, a temple is called a Pura (derived from Sanskrit), meaning a sacred place of worship. At the absolute center of this spiritual landscape stands Pura Besakih, universally revered as the “Mother Temple” of Balinese Hinduism.

Located in the village of Besakih within the eastern Karangasem regency, this ancient, terraced temple complex dates back to before 1,000 AD. Majestically perched on the southwestern slopes of Mount Agung—Bali’s highest and most sacred volcano—Besakih is a place where nature and devotion meet.

Sacred Architecture & The Grand Shrines

Visitors to Besakih are greeted by a grand, dramatic staircase that leads up through a traditional split gate into the courtyard of the main temple, Pura Penataran Agung. This is the epicenter of the complex, housing a central shrine dedicated to the Hindu Trinity (Trimurti): Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva.

Pura Penataran Agung alone contains 53 individual shrines. Among the most striking architectural features are the Merus—stunning, multi-tiered shrines that resemble pagodas, topped with sweeping roofs made from black sugar palm fiber. The highest and most sacred of these structures features 11 tiers reaching toward the sky.

Surrounding the main temple are 18 separate sanctuaries, each belonging to different regencies and caste groups across Bali. The deities worshipped at Besakih reveal a fascinating, syncretic blend of traditional Hindu gods, indigenous Balinese beliefs, and profound ancestor worship.

A Living Spiritual Calendar

Pura Besakih is not a relic; it is a hub of constant, vibrant spiritual activity. There are 12 recurring ceremonies held every 210 days, dictated by the traditional Hindu-Javanese Pawukon calendar.

In addition, massive special ceremonies based on the lunar Saka calendar are conducted throughout the year. These include:

  • Ngusaba: A vital blessing ceremony, which in other villages across the island is closely tied to the cycles of the rice harvest.

  • Bhatara Turun Kabeh: Held annually, this is the largest yearly ceremony at Besakih. The name translates to “All Gods Descend,” signifying a sacred time when the deities are believed to be present together.

  • Panca Wali Krama: A massive, island-wide purification ceremony held only once every 10 years.

  • Eka Dasa Rudra: The most monumental of all Balinese ceremonies, held just once every 100 years to spiritually purify the entire universe.

The Rhythm of Balinese Life

Beyond the grand events at the Mother Temple, everyday life in Bali is deeply intertwined with spirituality. Regular temple anniversaries, known as Odalan, act as purification ceremonies and can last anywhere from 3 to 42 days.

The Balinese celebrate sacred rituals at every stage of human existence—from the time a child is in the mother’s womb, through coming-of-age and marriage, all the way to the grand, final cremation ceremonies known as Ngaben.

This harmonious relationship between culture, nature, and human devotion is what makes Bali an extraordinary destination. It is a living, breathing spiritual ecosystem that continues to capture the hearts of artists, historians, and travelers from all over the world.
