Kintamani: Mount and Lake Batur

The beauty of Kintamani is amazing and become the one of the most popular destination in Bali. The temperature is between 18 to 20oC. Gde Prama, one of the local spiritual teacher that concern about ‘compassion’ mention that “if the lake is embraced by the mountain, especially the active volcano, then the beauty is there”. In addition, the Balinese believes that mount and lake Batur is a symbol of Lingga and Yoni, a blend of masculine and feminine.

A Dutch geologist, Van Bemmelen (1949 ) mentions that the caldera of  Lake Batur is one of the largest and most beautiful in the World. With the area of ​​16.6 Km2, it becomes the second largest caldera in Indonesia after the Toba caldera in North Sumatra.

The first of Mount Batur caldera was formed 29,300 years ago. It spewed 84 Km3 of Ignimbrite (a deposit of a pyroclastic density current, or pyroclastic flow). The next eruption was 20,150 years ago. It formed the second caldera by spewing 19 Km3 of Ignimbrite. The current active volcano of Mount Batur was formed 5,000 years ago. It continues to grow to this day. At the top of Mount Batur, there is a fumaroles (a hole in the Earth’s crust that vents gases) that climber use it to cook the eggs usually.
