The tradition of kite flying in Bali is a rich cultural heritage that beautifully blends art, philosophy, spirituality, and community togetherness. It has long been deeply rooted in agrarian communities, especially among farmers, as an expression of gratitude for abundant harvests and the fertility of the land.
For Balinese, kites are more than just a game. They carry a symbolic meaning as a bridge between humans and the upper realm (the sky). Flying a kite becomes a form of prayer and thanksgiving to the Creator after the harvest season.
In the past, kite flying was enjoyed during moments of leisure when the winds were strong and the skies were clear. This tradition continues today and is most commonly practiced during the windy season from June to September, considered the ideal time to fly kites.
One of the most meaningful philosophies connected to this tradition is the concept of “Rare Angon”, a figure from ancient Balinese literature portrayed as a young shepherd who maintains harmony between nature and humanity. Rare Angon symbolizes the belief that humans should live in harmony with nature, and the tradition of kite flying serves as a gentle reminder of these values, passed down from generation to generation.
