Learning Techniques and Values through Megamel

Participants will learn the basic techniques of megamél in a gradual and enjoyable way, including:

1. How to hold and strike the mallet correctly to produce clear and harmonious sounds.
2. The art of striking and damping the bronze keys to create the crisp, distinctive resonance that defines Balinese music.
3. Understanding tempo and rhythm through the combination of instruments, enabling participants to play steadily and in harmony with the group.
4. Mastering the exhilarating kotekan (interlocking rhythmic patterns), where players weave their parts together to create a rapid, energetic melody.

Because the beauty of gamelan relies on cooperation rather than solo performances, this workshop is a wonderful exercise in teamwork, mindfulness, and listening to one another—just as the Balinese do in their communities.”

3. A hands-on session where you’ll take your place at the instruments and practice the foundational techniques of megam
4. The grand finale: combining each instrument’s part to play a unified, energetic Balinese melody together as a group!
