Sea Turtle Conservation

Sea turtles are one the most ancient creatures alive today. They have existed for over 150 millions year. They are very important for the two vital ecosystems, the beaches and marine systems.

Indonesia is the home to six out of seven of the world’s sea turtle species. The seven living species of sea turtles are: 1). green turtle (Chelonia mydas), 2). hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), 3). olive ridley turtle (Lepidochelys olivachea), 4). leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea), 5). flatback turtle (Natator depressus), 6). loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), and 7). kemps ridley (Lepidochelys kempi). The last sea turtle, Kemps Ridley (Lepidochelys kempi), is one of the species that could not found in Indonesia. They are in Atlantic ocean and the gulf of Mexico.

In terms of reproduction, sea turtles take 30 years to mature, laying 60-130 eggs. They are only lay eggs every 2-5 years. Scientists estimate that the survival rates of sea turtles are 1-2%.

The other threat which affects the sea turtle is the peoples’s consumption of turtle eggs. They are considered to be very nutritious and to give a lot of health and sexual benefits. However, the research shows that the turtle eggs contain a chemical compound that is classified as Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP). This could cause several diseases such as liver, cancer, endocrine disruption, and nervous system disorder. Furthermore, the concentrations of coplanar PCBs (Polychlorinated biphenyl) represented 300 times the ADI (Acceptable Daily Intake) values set by the World Health Organization. PCBs can cause birth defects and various types of cancer.

Baliedu offers an educational program to build awareness of people for the sea turtle conservation.
