ORGANIC SALT EXPERIENCE

(Discovering Traditional Salt Making)

“Salt, small thing but essential”

This phrase reflects the life of traditional salt farmers in Kusamba Village, Bali.

This program offers experiential learning centered on the daily lives of traditional salt farmers in the coastal village of Kusamba, Bali.

The production of organic sea salt in this village is a form of local wisdom passed down through generations, representing a harmonious relationship between people, nature, and culture. Kusamba’s salt farmers continue to use traditional methods that rely entirely on natural elements, especially sunlight and seawater. This process stands as a living example of sustainable practices aligned with environmental balance.

Today, only around 16 families still maintain this profession. As social and economic conditions change, fewer young people are interested in continuing this tradition.

Without ongoing support and appreciation, this valuable traditional knowledge is at risk of disappearing.

Through this educational workshop, participants are invited to learn directly alongside local farmers and take part in every stage of salt production, from the preparation to harvesting. This participatory approach helps participants gain a deeper understanding of hard work, perseverance, and humanity’s deep dependence on nature.

Guided Directly by Professional Salt Farmers

Under the guidance of local salt farmers, this workshop offers a hands-on learning experience in producing organic sea salt using traditional tools made from natural materials. Participants not only learn the techniques of salt production, but also gain direct insight into traditional equipment that reflects the cultural values and local wisdom of the Kusamba community.

Benefits of Joining This Program:

  1. Gain a firsthand understanding of traditional sea salt production as a meaningful outdoor learning experience.
  2. Learn about the cultural values and local wisdom of the Kusamba community as part of Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.
  3. Understand humanity’s dependence on the sea and the importance of protecting and sustaining marine ecosystems.
  4. Develop empathy and social awareness through direct community interaction.
  5. Foster appreciation for cultural preservation and the sustainability of local communities.

Through this experience, participants not only learn about salt production, but also come to understand that every simple product carries social, cultural, and environmental values that must be preserved for sustainability.
